The report shines a light on the most important environmental initiatives under way in the UK and global dairy industries. And it sees new benchmarking data published for the first time on the energy, water, packaging and waste associated with milk and dairy processors.
Overall, the picture is one of work on many fronts to reduce the dairy industry’s impact on the environment. Although the UK is leading many other dairy producing countries through initiatives such as the Milk Roadmap, carbon footprinting and emissions trading, the dairy industry recognises it has a responsibility to do more.
Key findings include:
- 175g CO2 produced per kg produc;
- 1.28 million MWh of energy delivered to dairy site;
- 10.3 billion litres of water used (1.18 litres per kg product;
- 34,613 tonnes of waste, 26,299 tonnes of which is recovered or recycle; and
- 116,654 tonnes of packaging, of which 3,369 comes from recycled sources.
Dairy UK Director General Jim Begg said: “The global spotlight will soon be on Copenhagen, where ministers will certainly discuss agriculture’s role in reducing greenhouse gas emissions.”
