As preparations continue for the crucial UN climate convention meeting in Copenhagen in December on a new climate regime, the Asian Development Bank (ADB) has announced the establishment of an Advisory Group to advise the bank on strengthening its programs to meet the global challenge of climate change.
The Advisory Group comprises seven eminent persons and will be chaired by Dr. Rajendra K. Pachauri, Chair, Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and Director General of The Energy and Resources Institute.
The Group also includes Professor Hironori Hamanaka, Chair, Board of Directors, Institute of Global Environmental Strategies; Ms. Huguette Labelle, Chair, Transparency International; Professor Jeffrey D. Sachs, Director, The Earth Institute at Columbia University; Dr. Emil Salim, an adviser to Indonesia's President on environment and sustainable development issues.
Other members of the Group are Dr. Klaus Toepfer, Founding Director, Institute for Advanced Studies Climate, Earth System and Sustainability Sciences and former executive director of the United Nations Environment Programme(UNEP); and Professor Dadi Zhou, Director General (Emeritus) of the Energy Research Institute.
The Group will help the ADB's management in considering innovative ways of assisting the bank's developing member countries move their economies onto clean technologies and low-carbon development paths. They will also provide ADB's Management with perspectives and advice on some of the key issues to be discussed at the Copenhagen climate meeting in December.
ADB President Haruhiko Kuroda said, "To deal with these complex issues, I am pleased to announce that I have established an advisory group of internationally recognized climate change experts to help us develop programs relevant to the region in the medium- and long-term."
