Accra Report 2008

G8 Hokkaido Toyako Summit Leaders Declaration
G8 is an international forum for the governments of Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Russia, the United Kingdom, the United States and the European Union. The G8 held its annual meeting in Toyako, Japan, in June 2008, where the world leaders in the closing declaration committed to reduce "by at least 50% by 2050" global emissions of greenhouse gases (GHG). Kyoto Protocol
The Kyoto Protocol is an international agreement linked to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. The major feature of the Kyoto Protocol is that it sets binding targets for 37 industrialized countries and the European community for reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. The major distinction between the Protocol and the Convention is that while the Convention encouraged industrialised countries to stabilize GHG emissions, the Protocol commits them to do so. EU: Combating Climate Change
This booklet was published in September 2007. This booklet provides a way forward in with an integrated response. The way forward for the EU is an integrated energy and climate change policy, as the burning of fossil fuels is a major contributor to climate change. EU leaders endorsed such a policy in March 2007. EU includes the Greenhouse Gas Emission Trading Scheme (EU ETS)
Launched in January 2005 as the largest multi-country, multi-sector greenhouse gas emission trading scheme world-wide (based on Directive 2003/87/EC). The scheme is the first international trading system for CO2 emissions in the world. It covers over 11.500 energy-intensive installations across the EU, which represent close to half of Europe's emissions of CO2. [EU ETS]

INTERNATIONAL ORGANIZATIONS AND CLIMATE AGENCIES

United Nations (UN)
United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) sets the overall framework for intergovernmental action, and coordinates the COP climate change negotiations. Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) set up to review and organise the latest scientific research and knowledge regarding climate change. The purpose of the IPCC is to provide scientific technical and socio-economic information in a policy-relevant but policy neutral way to decision makers. The United Nations Environmental Program (UNEP) is the voice for the environment within the United Nations system. Based in Nairobi, Kenya, UNEP provide leadership and encourage partnership in caring for the environment by inspiring, informing, and enabling nations and peoples to improve their quality of life without compromising that of future generations. World Meteorological Organization, WMO, is the authoritative voice on the state and behaviour of the Earth's atmosphere, its interaction with the oceans, the climate it produces and the resulting distribution of water resources. World Health Organization, WHO, is the directing and coordinating authority for health within the United Nations system. WHO has developed a special programme (Climate Change and Human Health).

The European Union
The EU (European Union) is an economical and political union of its current 27 member states. EU is a vital player in the world's efforts to make a new global treaty at the UN COP15 summit in Copenhagen in December 2009. [EU]

The European Environment Agency (EEA)
EEA is an agency of the European Union. Our task is to provide sound, independent information on the environment. We are a major information source for those involved in developing, adopting, implementing and evaluating environmental policy, and also the general public. Currently, the EEA has 32 member countries. [EEA]

The World Energy Council
The World Energy Council is the most representative body of the energy industry with members in more than ninety countries. Its mission is to promote the sustainable supply and use of energy for the greatest benefit of all. The London-based organization has official consultative status with the United Nations. [WEC]

Global Climate Observing System
GCOS is co-sponsored by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) of UNESCO, United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), and International Council for Science (ICSU). The GCOS Secretariat located at the WMO headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland. The GCOS programme stimulates, encourages, coordinates and otherwise facilitates the taking of the needed observations by national or international organizations in support of their own requirements as well as of common goals. The International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA)
The International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) was officially established in Bonn on 26 January 2009. To date, 136 States signed the Statute of the Agency; amongst them are 45 African, 36 European, 32 Asian, 14 American and 9 Australia/Oceania States. [IRENA]

International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA)
The IAEA is the world´s center of cooperation in the nuclear field. It was set up as the world´s "Atoms for Peace" organization in 1957 within the United Nations family. The Agency works with its Member States and multiple partners worldwide to promote safe, secure and peaceful nuclear technologies. [IAEA]

COP15 Copenhagen
Copenhagen is the host of the COP15 UN Summit in 2009 which is set up to deliver a new binding global climate agreement that will apply to the post-Kyoto period after 2012. he Danish government has set up a website to deal exclusively with this upcoming COP15 Summit. [COP15 Copenhagen]

Group of Eight (G8)
G8, and formerly the (G6) or Group of Six) is a forum for governments of eight nations of the northern hemisphere. The G8 can refer to the member states or to the annual summit meeting of the G8 heads of government.

The World Bank
The World Bank is a vital source of financial and technical assistance to developing countries around the world. We are not a bank in the common sense. We are made up of two unique development institutions owned by 185 member countries—the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD) and the International Development Association (IDA). International Energy Agency
The International Energy Agency (IEA) acts as energy policy advisor to 28 member countries in their effort to ensure reliable, affordable and clean energy for their citizens. Founded during the oil crisis of 1973-74, the IEA’s initial role was to co-ordinate measures in times of oil supply emergencies. As energy markets have changed, so has the IEA. [IEA]

Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC)
APEC, is the premier forum for facilitating economic growth, cooperation, trade and investment in the Asia-Pacific region. APEC is the only inter governmental grouping in the world operating on the basis of non-binding commitments, open dialogue and equal respect for the views of all participants. Unlike the WTO or other multilateral trade bodies, APEC has no treaty obligations required of its participants. Decisions made within APEC are reached by consensus and commitments are undertaken on a voluntary basis. [APEC]

Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD)
OECD brings together the governments of countries committed to democracy and the market economy from around the world. It is one of the world's largest and most reliable sources of comparable statistics and economic and social data. The OECD collects data, monitors trends, analyses and forecasts economic developments and researches social changes or evolving patterns in trade, environment, agriculture, technology, taxation and more. Greening of Industry Network: is a non-profit international network of professionals from research, education, business, civil society organizations, and governments.

Red Cross (International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement): the Climate Centre supports the Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement and its partners in reducing the impacts of climate change and extreme weather events on vulnerable people.

World Wide Fund: is active in many fields related to climate change, and the main programs of the WWF are Climate change, Forests , Freshwater, Marine, Species and Sustainability.
